Celebrity chef Justin Sutherland was arrested Friday night in St. Paul on suspicion of domestic assault and felony threats of violence, according to the St. Paul Police Department. The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. when officers responded to reports of a man with a gun outside an address in the 800 block of Front Avenue.

Upon arrival, police spoke to a man and woman at the scene. The man, identified as 39-year-old Sutherland, was arrested and taken to the Ramsey County jail. Sgt. Mike Ernster, spokesman for the St. Paul Police Department, confirmed that Sutherland was booked on suspicion of felony domestic assault and felony threats of violence.
“Our investigators will be working to determine the circumstances that led to this arrest being made. When we have those details, we will share them,” said Ernster. The police department plans to present the case to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office for consideration of charges. As of Saturday afternoon, Sutherland remained in custody.
Justin Sutherland is a well-known figure in the culinary world, having gained fame through his appearances on popular television shows such as “Iron Chef,” “Fast Foodies,” “Top Chef,” and “Taste the Culture.” He has also served as a judge on various food-focused TV shows and talk shows, including “Good Morning America.” Sutherland is a Food Network “Iron Chef” winner and was a finalist on “Top Chef.” In addition to his television career, he is the author of the cookbook “Northern Soul” and won an Emmy for “Taste the Culture.”
Sutherland’s culinary ventures began with the opening of his first restaurant, Handsome Hog, located in St. Paul’s Lowertown. Although he is no longer affiliated with Handsome Hog, he owns Big E, an egg sandwich shop on Grand Avenue. Earlier this year, he announced plans to help reopen the beloved Rondo community restaurant, Golden Thyme Coffee and Cafe, in partnership with his father, Kerry Sutherland, and the nonprofit Rondo Community Land Trust.
This arrest marks a significant moment in Sutherland’s life, following a recent boating accident on July 3, in which he fell off his boat near the motor and sustained injuries. Sutherland has since provided updates on his recovery and continues to be a prominent figure in the culinary community.
